Adios, X/Twitter

Dear United Way of Rhode Island Community,

We wanted to share an important update about our social media strategy. After careful consideration, United Way of Rhode Island has made the decision to take an indefinite break from Twitter/X. While we recognize the role that digital platforms play in amplifying our work and connecting with our community, this decision aligns with our commitment to building a stronger and more equitable Rhode Island for all.

Over the past year, we’ve seen the landscape of Twitter/X shift in ways that no longer support our mission of fostering inclusive dialogue and empowering underrepresented voices. Recent studies have shown that hate speech on the platform has increased by 20% since its ownership change, disproportionately targeting marginalized communities (New York Times, 2023). Additionally, research indicates that harassment and misinformation have spiked by over 30% (Anti-Defamation League, 2023), making it increasingly difficult to engage in productive conversations that advance our values of justice, equity, and community wellbeing.

As an organization deeply committed to driving systemic change, we believe that our communications should always be rooted in inclusivity, safety, and respect. Twitter’s current environment does not align with these principles. We strive to create and participate in spaces where everyone feels heard, valued, and supported. Unfortunately, Twitter’s evolving platform policies and enforcement practices make it challenging to ensure that we are upholding this standard of community engagement.

This decision was not made lightly. We acknowledge that Twitter has been an important tool for us in reaching new supporters, sharing updates, and amplifying the voices of Rhode Islanders. However, it’s our responsibility to prioritize the wellbeing of our staff, partners, and those we serve, and to channel our efforts where we can have the greatest positive impact.

We remain active and engaged on our other platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube, where we will continue to share stories of hope, provide valuable resources, and advocate for change. We encourage you to join us on these platforms, where our commitment to community, equity, and justice is consistently reflected in the conversations we cultivate and support.

Thank you for your continued partnership in building a Rhode Island where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. We look forward to engaging with you in safer, more meaningful ways across our digital channels.

With gratitude,

The United Way of Rhode Island Team
