Help Available for Medicare Open Enrollment

POINT is here to help during Medicare Open Enrollment.

United Way of Rhode Island is partnering with the R.I. Office of Healthy Aging (OHA) to help Rhode Islanders age 65 and older enroll in a Medicare plan for 2021 coverage. The Medicare Open Enrollment period began October 15 and ends December 7. Assistance is available at no cost for Medicare Part D and Medicare Advantage plans.

Same help, delivered safely.

Due to the pandemic, in-person consultations are not available. Instead, United Way and OHA are offering virtual appointments by phone, computer, or mobile device. Appointments will be held using the preferred platform (Zoom, FaceTime, Google Meet, Skype, etc.) of the individual needing help. In addition, family members and caregivers are encouraged to be present and part of the appointment.

Individuals can make a Saturday appointment by calling POINT at (401) 462-4444, or 211, Monday – Friday. After the appointment is made, a Senior Health Insurance Program counselor will contact the individual directly on the date/time specified.

The Medicare Open Enrollment period is the only time individuals can make changes to their health and prescription plans for 2021.

4 things to keep in mind.

Above all, it’s important for older Rhode Islanders to know that they must re-enroll in their Medicare plan each year. Here are a few things to keep in mind when considering 2021 coverage:

  • Was there a procedure or medication you needed in 2020 that was not covered?
  • What were your co-pays? Are there new medications you’re taking or anticipate needing?
  • Have you received a new diagnosis?
  • Are you struggling financially or had a change to your income?

“Things may be different right now,” said Cortney Nicolato, president and CEO of United Way. “But, we’re still here for the thousands of Rhode Islanders who need to enroll in Medicare. No one should let the pandemic prevent them from getting the health and prescription coverage they need for the coming year.”

Individuals can make an appointment for Medicare plan consultation and enrollment assistance by calling POINT at (401) 462-4444, or by calling 211.
