On November 18, Women’s Leadership Council (WLC) in partnership with the Rhode Island College Advancement Division convened nearly 100 people at a recent statewide forum to identify ways to improve grade-level reading among the state’s third grade students. One strategy in particular rose to the top of the list for attendees — increasing access to out-of-school and summer learning programs.
The forum featured Melissa Husband, Executive Director of Community Action Partnership of Providence, Victor Capellan, Superintendent of Central Falls, and Caitlin Molina, Executive Director of Providence Talks along with experts in education from Rhode Island College. A round-table discussion focusing on chronic absenteeism, summer learning and family supports and screening followed.
